How to use an onkun index for looking up kanji for the N3 JLPT test
The onkun index allows you to look up kanji if you know one of the readings of the kanji , either onyomi or kunyomi. If you know one of these, then this index will quickly help you to find the other meanings or readings of the kanji

So really when you start to learn kanji for the N3 JLPT you start with the stroke order index and form index and then progress to the onkun index and will probably use all three.
