Wayback when we first started learning Japanese and studying for JLPT, self study Japanese at home, we visited a local Japanese bookstore and found sitting on the shelf a Sanseido Japanese - English - Romaji - Dictionary . We quickly bought after discovering that you could quickly and easily look up Japanese words by how they sound rather than struggle with kanji as a first point of learning. To start with the sound gets you thinking in hiragana & katakana and allows you to see the word in english script but with a Japanese meaning. It is an excellent tool, highly underated by everyone. So imagine you are listening to NHK news on the internet and you here a new word you dont know, you can spell it in romaji and bang in seconds with a sanseido romaji dictionary you have not only found the word but have its meaning, kanji and an example sentence showing usage, excellent!
