N3 JLPT - How to complete the N3 JLPT Application form in English

What do you need to complete the application for the N3 JLPT application form?


If you are taking the test in Japan

You need the Application envelope 500 yen from participating bookstores see this post for details.


* Allow two hours to read all the documents
* A passport sized photo, either black & white or colour (4cm high X 3cm wide, taken within the past six months, name and date of birth written on the back, may be taken with a digital camera printed on photographic paper)
* A glue stick to paste the photo to the application form
* Scissors to trim the photo top fit the size required
* Black ball point pen

1. Read the application guide in your language, English, Japanese with furigana, Chinese and Korean

Work through number on the Application form. There are 14 main questions to answer and one photograph to attach.

Start on page 12 of the guide and start with point 2. Application procedure (it explains the application period March 26 Friday to Friday April 30th 2010 postmarked.

Question 3 - Write your full name as it appears in your passport, separating your names by a space in roman letters (33 letters maximum) If your name is longer than 33 letters, try to shorten it as much as you can to fit the space.

Question 4. Write your date of birth, full year example, 1971, then write the month, then the day.

Question 5. Sex. Circle your gender Male or Female

Question 6. Country/Region code : Go to page 43 of the application guide book and select a three digit code that represents your country and region. Example: Africa, Algeria is code 101

Question 7 - Study Hour code - see page 44 and select a number from 1 - 10 to represent the total number of hours you have spent studying including class and self study time from 0-100 hours all the way through to 2001 hours plus. Note the Study hour code is a two digit code.

Question 8 - Purpose Code - See page 44 of the application guide. Select from 1 - 8 to represent the reason for taking the N3 JLPT test - Note is a one digit code.

Question 9 - Occupation code - See page 44 of the application guide. Select from 1 - 8 for your current occupation code. Note is a single digit code.

Question 10. Native Language code - See page 45 of the application guide and select the country and language which is your first or native language. Note this is a three digit code.

Question 11 Telephone number and Fax number in Japan include area code. You may write a mobile phone number.

Question 12. Paste your photograph see page 21 of the application for acceptable photographs and what is not acceptable. Don't forget to write your full name and date of birth on the back of the photograph before pasting it onto the application form. Note this photo will appear on the Certificate for the test.

Question 13. Write your address in Japan. Your post code, seven digits and your address in Kanji and write your full name .

Question 14. Write your company or school name and the phone number


Note: Check you have answered all the questions, attach your photograph to the form and take a photocopy of the completed form before you send it as a record of your application (both sides)

Application Envelope - Blue

* Write your name and address and phone number on this blue envelope

Then take the following

* Completed Application Form
* Completed Postal Payment form
* Completed Application Envelope
* 5500 yen test fee
* Money to pay for certified delivery mail

with you to the post office.

At the Post Office
