Study Plan for the N3 JLPT Japanese Language Proficiency Test

The following is a suggested study plan for the N3, JLPT Japanese Language Proficiency Test.

Things to consider:

  • Quiet place to study
  • Study every day
  • Computer and Internet connection
  • Curiosity to learn (link your study always to what you like about Japan)
  • Patience (when you can't remember things)
  • Don't overload (take a break and get some fresh air)

Study Plan

  • Study test instructions (check old tests)

  • Basic Japanese - time, weather, dates, family, relationships, place names in Japan, prefectures, location, position, travel, leisure, sports, animals, plants, foods, etc
  • Review basic grammar, tenses, forms, sentences patterns, verbs, conjugations.
  • If you have done level three on the old test look over your old notes before you start.
  • Set up an online flashcard system - for example: Anki
  • Set up flashcards for a range of topics, for example: adjectives, na adjectives, i adjectives, suru verbs, on yomi kanji, kun yomi kanji, adverbs, sentence patterns by verb conjugation
  • Practice getting your reading speed up by doing old tests, start slowly and then set your self set times with a kitchen timer.
  • Study everyday if you stop or delay you will forget, Japanese is a language that needs daily attention.
  • Think in layers, vocab, grammar, sentence patterns, topics, put your learning into context. If you study in the morning try using the new words you studied in the afternoon.Either typing a blog entry in Japanese, talking to a Japanese friend or another friend studying Japanese, talk to make the learning real.
  • Make notes of things you don't understand and get them explained by a teacher, study partner or online forum question.
  • Study N3 as if it is N2, that is study more kanji, more grammar, more vocab and expect surprise on test day when you open that test.
  • At the end of each study session always review your new vocabulary, talk them into a cassette or into an mp3 player. You have seen the words but you need to make them real.
  • Study a wide range of things, read manga and self translate with a dictionary, read one article from a Japanese news site and dissect it, study using a set textbook, review old study notes, practice new sentences with a study partner, call a Japanese friend on the phone, blog in Japanese on your favourite topic. Watch Japanese movies and take notes, listen to Japanese radio on the Internet NHK and take notes of new words. Watch videos on You Tube that teach Japanese or watch Japanese television commercials.Variety is the spice of life.
  • record on paper all new words, sentences, kanji, grammar, giseigo, katakana that you learn so you have a study record.Review it at the end of each session and the start of the next one, have a friend quiz you using it. The key is to get the new information in some how!
  • Borrow Japanese textbooks from your library and mine them for new words, grammar, kanji, sentence patterns, etc.
  • Study official test guides and mine them. Get a Japanese friend to read sentences from your study guides and you try to answer them by speaking or writing the answer in a set time.
  • Practice old tests, practice reading, practice, answering and most of all practice on completing them within time. Start with old level 4 tests to get your confidence, then old level 3 tests and then when your ready try old level 2 tests to a set time and then translate old level 2 tests with in a set time and mine them for words, kanji and grammar
